Why did the boat cross the road?

Got to take our boat over a dam (and road) going between two chains of lakes. It was a fun little adventure, but the channel on the lower side of the dam was really really shallow for a 20 yard section. So shallow we had to walk the boat through with the motor all the way up and pick our line based on where it was deepest.
